Racing to market leadership: Product launch and upgrade decisions

چکیده
Firms might not launch a next generation product as soon as a more efficient technology or a better product design is ready. We use a stylized model to analyze firms’ product launch and upgrade decisions in an incumbent-vs-entrant setting. We find that large profit margins from the next generation product alone do not provide the entrant sufficient incentives to launch the next generation product, although small profit margins will deter the entrant from joining the competition. If the entrant intends to enter the market at an earlier time, it should consider process improvements that lower the firm’s launch costs of the current generation product. In addition, the incumbent must respond strategically to the entrant’s arrival. In particular, when anticipating a late arrival of the entrant, the incumbent should upgrade to the next generation earlier. The incumbent also has a cost advantage in the race to launch the next

Strategic Innovation and Technology Adoption in an Evolving Industry∗
We introduce a racing model with multiple product generations, product innovation, spin-outs, and licensing. Industry conditions and innovation characteristics affect who wins the race and who markets the resulting product. Small firms market their innovations when they pioneer a new generation or improve quality in a young generation and license their innovations in mature generations. If old ...
متن کاملMarket Expansion or Margin Erosion: The Double-Edged Sword of Digital Convergence
Digital convergence enables firms in the computing, communications, and electronic consumer industries to design and launch multifunctional converged products. This presents firms with a significant opportunity for value creation and profit growth. At the same time, the increased substitutability between products supplied by different industry segments heightens competition and poses a signific...
متن کاملThe Effects of Autoscaling in Cloud Computing on Product Launch∗
Web-based firms often rely on computational resources to serve their customers, though rarely is the number of customers they will serve known at the time of product launch. Today, many of these computations are run using cloud computing. A recent innovation in cloud computing known as autoscaling allows companies to automatically scale their computational load up or down as needed. We build a ...
متن کاملA simulation-optimization approach to integrate process design and planning decisions under technical and market uncertainties: A case from the chemical-pharmaceutical industry
Technical and market uncertainties during product launch planning can have a significant impact in the companies decision-making process, particularly in today’s business context of the pharmaceutical industry. This paper addresses this planning problem, considering both types of uncertainty and integrating process design and capacity decisions under limited resources. A Mixed Integer Linear Pr...
متن کاملOperationalizing technology improvements in product development decision-making
Achieving competitive advantage and price premiums in many technology-based markets requires the incorporation of current technology in new products. To do so, firms in hyper-competitive environments increasingly plan and design their products concurrent with the independent development and validation of underlying technologies. Simultaneous validation of a core technology has important implica...
